Character: Jacob Portman

Jacob Portman is a 16 year old from Florida. Through his childhood he immensely looked up to his grandfather, Abraham Portman. Jacob grew up listening to his grandfather’s stories about an island of “peculiar children” where he had grown up. Because of this, he was mocked from his school peers and was rejected by those around him. After a horrific incident involving his grandfather’s death, he suffered from severe psychological damage resulting in rejection from his only friend and even his family. After suffering with continuous nightmares and anxiety for an extended period of time, Jacob finally listened to Abraham’s final words and went to the island his grandfather told him of. I chose the song The Middle by Jimmy Eats World. I feel like it portrays the difficulty of youth and might be a song that Jacob Portman would heavily relate to.

But when the island was bombed by the Nazis, Abraham was infuriated and felt that it was his duty to join the military and get revenge for what they’ve done. After the war ends, Abe tells Emma that he is going to go build a life for them and later return for her. But as the years went on she received less and less letters from him and it became apparent that he wouldn’t be returning to the island. Abe ended up going to the US and starting a family there, never returning to Emma. I chose the song Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd to express Emma’s sorrow while awaiting for Abraham’s
