Women in Culture and Society from the Story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid
Women in society have always been judged by their actions and appearance. In the short story "Girl", the narrator focus is advising the girl to avoid wrong judgment that can damage her reputation, but also teaches her thing she should know to have a better life. Although the defining of a lady is different everywhere around the word, is safe to say that is a women that behave to society standards.
Society judge a lady by the way she behaves in front other, trying to be the perfect lady. While in the Middle East a lady is a woman who is respectful to men and dresses to their culture standard; covering their hair and/or face. In the United Stated a lady is a polite woman. The story “Girl” narrator tell women to be cautious of the way they act. For example; “On Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming” (Kincaid, 120) as a way of saying that even being herself it may don’t stand to society standards. If the people think that a woman is a slut, they will treat her like one even though she is not. People always criticizes other without know the circumstances and the author explain and give advice of those thing in the story.

The narrator in the story teach the girl how to get thing done at home. She says, “This is how to sweep a whole house; this is how to sweep the yard” (Kincaid 120), making sure that the girl know how to physically take care of her home. Also the narrator advise her on how to act in front of strangers, she says; “This is how to behave in the presents of a man who don’t know you very well, and this way they won’t recognize immediately the slut I have warned you against becoming” (Kincaid 120).
