In James Loewen’s book Lies My Teach Told Me he describes two inseparable cultural concepts for chronological memories called Sasha and Zamani, which transcend well beyond the fourth dimension (“Lies My Teacher,” ch.10). Sasha is memories of past events, deceased people, etc. that occurred or coexisted within an individual’s lifetime, which Loewen refers to as the “living dead”. When the last person that has a particular memory from their lifetime passes away, that memory becomes Zamani. When a memory becomes Zamani, no person still alive has a firsthand account of that memory, thus forcing the memory to survive through only what was shared about it. Becoming known as the “Day without Immigrants” these protests were accompanied by more protests, which were in direct opposition of one another. However, Haymarket’s biggest legacy, May Day, has yet to be declared a holiday in the U.S. despite its domestic roots. However, several other nations, including Russia, observe May Day every year on the 1st of May. The U.S. government created an alternative to May Day, called Labor Day, which instead of emphasizing better work conditions, emphasizes having pride in your work. Regardless of why it isn’t a recognized holiday, it is clear that the public has remained divided on the actual issues of the Haymarket Affair. With the help of Google Maps, I was able to find the current distance between the Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument and Police Memorial Statue, at slightly less than 15 miles apart. This distance can be used as a symbolic representation of the divide in society on these issues, which at only 15 miles seems small, but in a city, 15 miles is hours away and contains millions in its
