The American dream carries a different meaning for every person. The definition may also change according to the time period and situation. In many sources, the American dream is defined as the ideal that all United States citizens should have equal opportunity to obtain success and prosperity through dedication. Two famous speeches, “The Speech at the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry and “The Speech in the Constitutional Convention” by Benjamin Franklin, define the term American dream during the time we were fighting for our independence. These speeches helped define the American dream by motivating the colonists to build the foundation foundation of the term, which is freedom and independence.
The “American Dream” is usually thought of as aspiring to change one's life for the better and materially better their situation. We think of it today as going to college and getting a cushy job, but for many in our American history it was much more simple. Many asserted their American dream by declaring their independence. The main similarity was that each had an audacious goal to improve their own life and the lives of some of those around them. Their pursuits of liberty were intimately entwined within the dramatic upheavals taking place in the land recently named America.
The American dream is a dream of land in which life should be better and richer for everyone. It’s a land where people succeed to accomplish their ambition of a better life. Most of the people have a different way of defining this American Dream. Unfortunately, for some, it could mean wealth,status,or power whereas for others it could mean companionship, good morals,love,and amity. According to our Declaration of Independence, it entitles every man and woman the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Based on Declaration of Independence, Americans take on the “American Dream”. The idea of the American dream is based on a fantasy that an individual can achieve success regardless of family history, race, or religion just by simply working hard enough. Americans have this belief because they are protected by the above document. They believe that they are entitled to achieve their dreams because they can.
The view of the American Dream is different for everyone. The Epic Journey, by James Truslow Adams, views the American Dream as a dream of attaining one’s fullest stature regardless of one’s social status. Similarly, in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, The Great Gatsby, Gatsby’s American Dream relates to Adam’s dream but limited to materialistic wealth- a dream that seeks for motor cars, higher wages, and to impress the people of high status. Both Adams and Gatsby believe that everyone has an equal chance of achieving their dream. Adams says “The dream is that dream of land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement”.
One could not view a group of boys marooned on an island warring with each other a conventional story. The main motif throughout the story is the loss of innocence and humanity. For the group of boys present throughout “Lord of the Flies”, the journey they took was not one of normal circumstances, nor was the behavior accompanying their predicament. At the beginning, they attempted to adapt with some normalcy. They searched for an authority figure, which became Ralph due to his possession of the "magical" conch.

The Pursuit of “The American Dream” The “American Dream” has always existed as a primary fundamental of American culture. The basis of the “American Dream” is that every US citizen has the right to receive equal opportunity to attain success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative because it is a given right offered for everyone, personal to each individual, and extremely rewarding. The pursuit of the American Dream is chased after by many individuals from numerous diverse backgrounds. American Dream James Truslow Adams, in his book which was written in 1931 and called “ The Epic of America” wrote about American dream, that American dream is about being richer and living in better life. Also that American dream is more materialistic, that people work a lot of hours to gain things which they want to have. Such as luxury cars, big houses. They want to be wealthy, rich and have all expensive things and live in a world of money and wealth.
In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson talks about quote, “The American Dream, and how life should be different”. The Declaration is written as a break up towards the British king, but Jefferson makes his claims as to why the king should listen to him. In The Declaration of Independence Jefferson states, “... That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights…” (40 Jefferson). This quote is the full on definition of the saying the American Dream. In America all everyone wants to do is to be equal and live in peace with one another, in in the text Jefferson states their wants and needs of being equal.
The American dream is an illusion that is deeply implanted in the minds of the people, it sets a bar for life achievement and offers hope to work hard to achieve their dreams. As for Americans, they are raised in a society to where they are expected to make lots money and to have a healthy family. After all in our society success is largely based off positions of power and financial stability. For example, in The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there were multiple interpretations of the ideal American dream in the 1920s. In the 1920s, due to the growth of materialism, people advertised and fancied the power of money to fulfilling their dreams.
The term “American dream” was coined in 1931 by James Adams. It is defined as the dream of a land where life is fuller and richer for everyone. This dream has been shared by millions of people all over the world since America was discovered. People such as European immigrants, and even people born in the Americas who wanted to expand west. The Joad family’s journey is a prime example of the determinism families had to try to live the American dream.
Over the years, a dream that changed the way the world saw the U.S. was created and it is the American Dream. As the years passed and the U.S. was developing the American Dream as well developed or as many say changed. The American Dream is a term that was introduced in 1931 by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America (Kamp 2). The term “American Dream” started with a meaning that was reachable: “a better, richer and happier life for all citizens of every rank”(3). Throughout the years the term`s meaning changed dramatically.
Our Founding Fathers started the American Dream when they declared their independence from England because of their belief in unalienable rights. They believed that people had the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They made a country where people could break free from class restrictions and create the life they chose no matter what their circumstances at birth were. This was called the American Dream. The way people define the American Dream has changed over time.
but the definition of The American Dream really isn’t just as simple as “the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative”. Its complicated, diverse and every person you ask will tell you something different. Sometimes the answers will be vague, but some will also be specific. So, let’s see what people really think.
