Jan Karski is a hero for numerous reasons; he was brave, intelligent, and lived to tell the world. Through his efforts to help stop the war, other nations opened their eyes and became more involved in what was going on. He was righteous and played an important role in helping to end the war and save many people.
The Holocaust was a murder and persecution of 6 million jews by the Nazi. In 1933, the Jewish population was over 9 million in Europe. It started with laws singling out the Jews and forcing them to live in ghettos. Concentration camps were formed, and Jews were pulled from ghettos and put into the camps. The concentration camps were soon turned into extermination camps. The Nazi wanted to exterminate as many Jews as possible; this is the part of the Holocaust that most people remember.
Jan Karski, also known as Jan Kozielewski, was born in Lodz Poland, in 1914. He has 7 older siblings. In school, he was an exceptional student, who’s strong subjects were history, literature, and poetry. Karski finished school in 1931. After fighting for Poland and being held as a prisoner in Kozielszczyna, Karski managed to escape and became a part of the Polish resistance movement. He worked as a messenger between Poland and the Polish government in exile for the Polish Underground Home Army. Karski is best known for his daring mission being smuggled into the Warsaw Ghetto and Izbica transit camp to collect firsthand accounts about the trouble of the Jews under the Nazi and report them to the outside world.
