Campus Racism 101 is an article written by Nikki Giovanni that speaks of her struggles teaching at a predominantly white college. Speaking of the hardships she has faced when it comes to being African-American teaching mostly Caucasian students. “People who think I should be at a predominantly Black institution will ask “Why are you at Tech?”’- (Nikki Giovanni) Giovanni soon goes into why she doesn’t feel that just because she is African-American she should be at a predominantly black college. Bringing to topic everyone (Blacks and whites ect.)
In the article “We’re Sick of Racism, Literally,” Douglas Jacobs argued that those who “experienced racism were more likely to have blood pressure”, thus meaning discrimination can affect physical health(Jacobs). He expatiates on how discrimination is leading to health problems by sharing medical records of people who were discriminated against. Jacobs criticizes how racist people in the United States are “[adding] injury to insult and magnifies the suffering of these times” which leads him to assert that racism should be eliminated. Jacobs believes that racism does not belong in this world due to its malicious nature and how it affects the human body which is why he wants to remove it. Racism is a very touchy and common issue in society today. Many people react differently to racism. Some people think that other races should strive for power. They think it should be a race to prove that any of the races can do whatever they want. Some people are more likely to promote this idea of competition amongst races.
According to Heather Donald’s article Is the Criminal Justice System Racist? “About one in 33 black men was in prison, compared with one in 205 white men”. The number of black men in jail is appalling enough on its own, but when it is compared to the number of white men in jail it is beyond outrageous. Why are there more Black Americans in jail than White Americans? As stated in What It’s Like to Be Black in the Criminal Justice System “Social science research shows striking racial disparities at nearly every level .”
Clare explains why she decided to leave her former African American identity for one of white privileges. However,
Nelson Mandela once said, "No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite”. Racism can often be defined as discrimination or hatred against a group of people based on the color of their skin. As an African American family visits the capital while on vacation. Lorde realizes that racism is bigger than she thinks when she has her first racist experience, which shows that discrimination is overridden by equality even in a free country.
In the 1950’s segregation was a major issue throughout all facets of society in the United States. One major part of society which was majorly affected by segregation was education. The only schools African Americans were allowed to go to were all black and the conditions were horrible. Some families tried enrolling their children in the public white schools and all were rejected. One brave family fought against the unfair segregation their child was facing and petitioned it to the court; this was known as the Brown vs Board of Education case.

There is no logical explanation for racism but America was established from slavery, and it is taught or learned from generation to generation. Although I was not born in slavery, or the so-called racists’ days, racism still exist. In this day and time, I know racism exist and it exist from all races not just the White people, especially through employment. Raven Simone stated “that she wouldn’t hire someone with an unusual African-American name”. Her comment was kind of weird, considering she is an African American.
She revealed that she believed that she’s black singe she was five years old. “I was drawing self-portraits with the brown crayon instead of the peach crayon.” However, the wife of Kevin Moore asserted that she did deceived or fooled anybody, Yahoo News added. “I just feel like I didn’t mislead anybody; I didn’t deceive anybody.” “If people feel misled or deceived, then sorry that they feel that way, but I believe that’s more due to their definition and construct of race in their own minds than it is to my integrity or honesty, because I wouldn’t say I’m African-American, but I would say I’m black, and there’s a difference in those terms.”
Is she going to be the start of people changing their race or will this be stopped? This is something society cannot control whether we want to or not. Race is what separates cultures and power between different backgrounds of humans. It is what controls how we interact and live our lives which it has been since the beginning of life. “ According to the National Association of Social Workers Web site, racism is “the ideology or practice through demonstrated power or perceived superiority of one group over others by reasons of race, color, ethnicity, or cultural heritage....” The definition further goes on to note that “racism is manifested at the individual, group, and institutional level.” (Blank, 2013) Despite how much time has passed by, racism continues to be a huge issue today. We see it every day, some have even been confronted by racial discrimination, or racial slurs even. We see how the system could be for example: how blacks continue to get more severe punishments or blacks have higher the chance to get criminally sentenced than whites.
“Racism distorts our sense of danger and safety. We are taught to live in fear of people of color. We are exploited economically by the upper class and unable to fight or even see this exploitation because we are taught to scapegoat people of color (Kivel, P).” This quote from the article, The Cost of Racism to White People, barely digs at one of the reasons why racism still occurs in today’s world. There are many motives out there for why racism still occurs.
Racism has always existed with humans. Racism is treating someone differently of unfairly simply because they belong to a different ethnic community of have a different religion or nationality. When someone believes their race is better than another and feels superior ro other people because of his of her race, is called racism. Throughout time, many people have lost their lives, or lost their families and children, and are left without homes due to racism. Racism causes wars, which could destroy humanity ultimately.
Racism is an ever growing issue in the world, and something we can’t hide behind. According to dictionary.com the defintion of racism is: “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” Race was created socially by how people perceive ideas and faces people are not used to yet. It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. Racism is an issue that has lasted throughout history, providing justification for a group’s dominance over another.
