Jane Eyre, a novel by Charlotte Bronte, was based off of the Victorian time period. This time period was notorious for gender and social inequality. The society at the time barely allowed women to work, and certainly not allowed to vote. The ideals of inequality within genders were brutal and evident throughout the novel, making the book rather controversial. This is no different regarding the social inequalities, which were more underlying, but still clearly shown by Bronte. These two controversial issues for the time were brought to light by Jane Eyre and Charlotte Bronte, who put them into context with both metaphorical alongside apparent examples of social and gender inequality. Helen was a more demure girl compared to Jane, who believed firmly in justice and equality. To contrast the two in terms of the women’s place would align the same. Jane believed that everyone should be treated the same under the law, saying “‘But I feel this, Helen; I must dislike those who, whatever I do to please them, persist in disliking me; I must resist those who punish me unjustly. It is as natural as that I should love those who show me affection, or submit to punishment when I feel it is deserved.’” (Bronte 105). Jane’s perspective on the ideals of equality are different than Helen’s, as Helen gives full power and trust to the authority, even if it may discriminate against her gender in the long run.
