I agree that Rome was not overthrown by external enemies but was defeated by its own internal problems. The fall of Rome was mainly due to internal problems because the Romans were only fulfilling their own needs, the law were not reliable and the struggle with the right emperor led to the end of Rome. These internal problems made the empire unstable and led to external problems. For example, in document C, Marcellinus, a Roman soldier criticizes the Romans for being selfish and only worrying about themselves.
The son of a Baptist preacher, Titus Oates’, incessant troublesome behavior and pretentions sooner caused him to plot his own stars that ended his life in misery and seclusion. While serving as a chaplain for the Protestants in 1677 under Henry VI of Norfolk, he became acquainted with Israel Tonge, an anti- Catholic fanatic. Tonge easily persuaded Oates of the existence of a conspiracy among the Jesuits’ to assassinate King Charles II and place his Roman Catholic brother, James, Duke of York on the throne. He went on to invent a series of treasonable letters and accounts and had forged them. His false allegations resulted in barbaric executions and deaths of many innocent lives.
In 1095, Pope Urban II called the Council of Clermont to enact important reforms in the Roman Catholic Church. At that council, he gave a speech in which he challenged the lords of Europe to combine their forces to reclaim the Holy Land from its Muslim conquerors. In 1096, a French monk named Peter the Hermit pulled together a disorganized army of peasants and soldiers with his fiery sermons. Together, they plunged eastward toward Constantinople in what came to be known as the People’s Crusade.
The weapons of the Vietnam war could be divided into 4 different groups. Weapons of the Air, American Infantry and artillery, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong Weapons, and Other fun stuff. Let's start with the first category which is the weapons of the air. This weaponry was mostly used by the americans and south Vietnam. "Let me recall to your minds an incident related of that best of men and wisest of rulers, Antoninus Pius, who, as he lay dying, in his home at Loriam in Etruria, summed up the philosophy of life in the watchword, Aequanimitas. ... Natural temperament has much to do with its development, but a clear knowledge of our relation to our fellow-creatures and to the work of life is also indispensable. One of the first essentials in securing a good-natured equanimity is not to expect too much of the people amongst whom you dwell." said William Osler. Antoninus Pius was one of the five major Roman Emperors.
The Roman masses were a gullible bunch, and the characters involved in the conspiracy of the play found this particularly expedient by exploiting this weakness in the people of Rome for the benefit of certain agendas. Throughout the play the role of the mob is an essential factor in how certain events materialize and transpire. Although its influence is subtle at times, the mob’s position and activities have grave consequences. For instance: there was a man by name of Pompey that controlled a portion of the Roman Republic’s armed forces.
The Roman Empire was starting to diminish. Wars had to be fought, diseases spread across the land, many people died, causing the population to decrease. More and more people left Rome. The primary reasons for the “fall” of Rome were because of war, invasion, and natural disasters or diseases. One of the main reasons for the Roman Empire falling was because of war.
While Faustus' practice of black magic and his pact with Mephastophilis condemns him to damnation, until almost the last lines of the play Faustus is conscious of the possibility of salvation if he repents. He is reminded throughout the play that if he truly repents, God will forgive him. It is for this reason that every time Faustus called out to God Mephastophilis is alarmed, because he knows that Faustus could be saved if he only repents and asks for forgiveness. The true conflict of the play is a battle between good and evil, and the prize is Faustus' soul. Faustus himself is represented through the Good and Evil Angles, they represent the two sides of Faustus’s character that are constantly fighting over which way he will turn.
Historian Arnold J. Toynbee said, “Sooner of later, man has always had to decide whether he worships his own power or the power of God.” In regards to the Crusades, Pope Urban II chose to worship his own power – yet he got thousands of Europeans to worship the power of God. The Crusades were a series of campaigns in which Europeans tried to take the Holy Land from Muslims. Pope Urban II headed the First Crusade, which lasted from 1096 to 1099, after he received a request for military aid from Alexios I. Alexios I was the Byzantine ruler, and his empire was facing attacks from the Seljuk Turks. The Crusades soon overtook all aspects of European society as the promise of salvation and wealth was too great to pass up.
The Crusades Even though, Crusader States in the Holy Land were unsustainable because of political instability. Long term problems were caused by Western presence in the Outremer1 and the political situation in Europe throughout the period. In Europe, the form of political dissension among the leaders of the various crusades caused everything to fall. They were many causes to the Crusades unsustainability like, ongoing tension between the Normans and the Byzantine Empire2 which culminated in the Norman defeat at Durazzo in 1107. The other main arguments include the lack of support for Jerusalem, as well as the lack of manpower, the debatable lack of strong leadership, and to a certain extent the arrogance of the Crusaders.
Alizade Nigar Lecture – A “The Roman Empire’s persecution of Christianity was inevitable.” To what extent do you agree with this statement? Throughout the history Romans thought of themselves very religious people and attributed their world power to their good relations with Gods. Conquering an area, then bringing its gods to Rome, the “temple of the whole world,” was an ordinary Roman practice. However, when Christianity emerged similarly what historians call “popular religious,” religious groups with broad and wide appeal.
