Japan played a very large role in World War II. Japan was on the Axis Powers side during the war alongside Nazi, Germany and Italy. All of Japan’s issues began when the League of Nations investigated Japan after they invaded Manchuria in 1931. Japan left the League of Nations soon after. Before World War II began, Japan signed the Anti-Comintern Pact with Nazi Germany in 1936. This pact stated that Germany and Japan would keep out of communist states. Then on September 27, 1940, Germany, Italy and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact which was an agreement between the countries that said they would ally together during war.
The start of World War II began when Adolf Hitler and the Nazis invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. At this point in time, the United States was not involved in the war. The United States became involved after Japan surprise attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. About six months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway occurred in June 1942. This battle happened because Japan wanted to sink any US aircraft carriers that were still left after the bombing. The Japanese Fleet Commander, Yamamoto Isoroku had made the plans for this attack, but Chester Nimitz from the US solved the codes. Now the United States knew where to place attackers

By 1945, Japan added two more losses to the list. From February 19 to March 26 of 1945, Japan and the United States fought the Battle of Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was Japan’s island until the United States decided they wanted a military base near Japan. The Japanese had about 23,000 soldiers lined up prepared to defend their island. Three divisions from the US Marine went into attack. US soldiers vs Japanese soldiers fighting for over a month. The United States had more casualties than the Japanese during this battle but ended up pulling off another victory taking control of Iwo
