There exists, in the world of criminal justice, a special group of criminals. These are criminals, that despite being minors, are charged as adults. Karter Kane Reed is in this group. When he was just 16, he stabbed and killed Jason Robinson. He was found guilty of second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison, albeit, with the possibility of parole after having served 15 years of incarceration. BACKGROUND Both Karter Kane Reed and Jason Robinson were born in Dartmouth Massachusetts. Karter Kane Reed was friends with Gator Collet and Nigel Thomas. As The standard Times says, “ Mr. Thomas was tried as a juvenile and given a one-year suspended sentence. Mr. Collet, like Mr. Reed, was tried as an adult. Mr. Collet pleaded guilty to manslaughter and served 10 years and three months of a 17- to 20-year sentence. “ (The Standard Times Par. 29-30 ) Karter Reed, having been the one to do the stabbing, received the longest sentence of the three. The superintendent of Darmouth Highschool, Thomas E. Kelly, was a crucial witness in the case. He happened to be visiting Darmouth High that fateful day, and heard the threats made by Karter. In his trial, it was said, “ I heard threats to the victim and his friend. “ (COMMONWEALTH vs. Karter Reed ( Pg 107, note 2 ) Karter was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in …show more content…
However, Jason’s mom believes that justice has not been served. As The Standard Times reads, “ Jason Robinson’s mother, said her family has been trying to put the tragedy behind them, and Mr. Reed’s release will not help those efforts.” (The Standard Times Par. 8) Karter’s dad was absent, but his mother hoped that he would be judged as an adult. Karter Reed has left prison and now lives on Parole. One can only hope that Mr. Reed does something noble with his life given that Jason’s life can never be recovered. Thoughts on case All things considered, the three juveniles were treated fairly. The youngest one, Nigel Thomas, received the lightest sentence and the one most responsible, Karter Reed, received the harshest sentence. Even though Karter Reed is free, depite the fact that Jason is forever gone, justice has been served, as much as justice can be served in this type of situation, anyways. Karter Reed has repented about his mistakes. He can never bring back Jason, but he can forever try to make up for it through the way he lives his life. Works
