The last we see of Pycelle in canon is face planted on his desk with his head bashed in by Varys or one of his “little birds.” We saw a lot of him in all five books, mostly doing mischief apparently all on behalf of the Lannisters. We saw him tell lies. It could be Margery Tyrell’s life will be forfeit because of a lie about moon tea. Once he lied to Tyrion and got himself thrown in the black cells for his trouble. It seems he might have been the one to procure the poison for Jon Arryn’s assassination. He seems to be corrupt, too. When he is arrested on Tyrion’s orders, he is naked in bed ready to do the deed with a young serving girl, not someone who would have had much choice in the matter, and in flagrant violation of his master-ly vow of …show more content…

Is he really the loathsome treacherous creature we find in almost all the five books, or is there something more? We know Pycelle was first appointed Grand Maester at a fairly young age a few months before the death of Aegon V at a time when three older Grand Maesters all had died shortly after appointment and within little more than a year of one another. He is not mentioned in connection with the tragedy at Summerhall and so appears not to have been involved with that fiasco and to have kept clean hands with respect to it. He is not mentioned in connection with Jaehaerys II. We learn from the World Book that in Aerys II’s reign he took a lead role in trying to find agreement between Aerys and his son Rhaegar in order to prevent a replay of the Dance with the Dragons. At one point he even wrote to the Citadel at Old Town (Maester HQ) warning of the possibility of such a conflict. We see nothing of “treacherous Pycelle” until near the end of Robert’s Rebellion he advises King Aerys to open the city gates to Tywin Lannister, leading to the sack of Kings Landing and Aerys’ own death, along with the brutal murder by Gregor Clegane of Elia Martell and her and Rhaegar’s two children, Aegon and Rhaenys.
