The novel “Jaws” by Peter Benchley is about a man named Chief Brody and the conflicts he faces as chief of Amity. In the beginning of the novel Brody is overwhelmed with obstacles that prevent him from doing his job. He wants to protect the people of Amity but there are forces of nature that prevent him from doing so. The shark is not attacking the people of Amity on purpose it is just trying to survive. The Mayor on the other hand is intentionally hurting Brody by preventing him from doing his job to save his own skin. Brody is also his own worst enemy and thinks he is incapable of defeating the shark. These obstacles prevent him from fulfilling his duty as Chief of Amity and stunt his growth as a man.

The Mayor’s motivation is greed and self-satisfaction. He cares more about his wallet getting hurt than the citizens of Amity. There is a great amount of tension between Brody and Larry because of their conflicts of interest. This can be displayed in the text when Brody lets Larry into his office and he says, ““Send ‘his honor’ in,”Brody said with a hint of sarcasm.””(pg 10). The tone that Brody uses to address the Mayor shows that Brody has no respect for him. This is Especially due to the fact that he has no concern for his citizens even though he is the mayor and as mayor the citizens should be his main priority. Brody sees this and even questions his intentions by asking him,”Are you asking me as the mayor or as a real estate broker or out of friendly interest or what, Larry?” (pg 10). Larry is also deep in with the sharks himself and is afraid of getting caught Their varying perspectives can further be seen when Larry says,”Look, Martin, this town doesn’t need that kind of publicity.” Brody responds “It doesn’t need any more people killed, either,” Brody decides to let the beaches stay open because of how persistent and hostile he was being. Overall Brody changed greatly throughout the course of the novel. In the beginning he was weak and easily manipulated by the Mayor.
