Jay Gatsby is mainly a byronic hero because of this passionate quest for Daisy. “The modesty of the demand shook me. He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths--so that he could ‘come over’ some afternoon to a stranger's garden” (page 85), in this chapter it is revealed that the location of Gatsby’s house is for the purpose to see Daisy, this shows how passionate he is about his quest of impressing and winning the heart of his love; the superficial Daisy. Even Nick feels ‘’inclined to reserve all judgements’’ (page 3) because despite of his disapproval of Gatsby’s actions, Nick has a certain amount of respect for the power of his ideals.
Jay is also a byronic hero because of his troubled and mysterious past, as shown in the following quote: "Somebody told me that he killed a man once.” "It's more that he was a German spy during the war." "You look at him sometimes when he thinks nobody's looking at him. I bet he killed a man.”(page 48).
