Henry David Thoreau aspired to “suck out all the marrow of life” when he chose to lodge in a small cabin near Walden pond. This passage from Walden has stuck with me since I first read it. Why would any of us pursue anything else in life? Why would we not aim to derive every ounce of life out of life? Thoreau understood. He believed stripping life of its manmade conveniences would result in him gaining the most he could out of his existence. Everybody treks down their own path, but for most of these people, where they are at and what they have done may not suffice. They may not have accomplished everything out of life that they wished they had. I wholeheartedly intend to never repeat this endless cycle of disappointment and bitterness.

This brings me to the question of why I am here. Besides any sort of metaphysical debate, this question can be answered by simply saying that I am here, in the sea of average suburbia, to realize what I do not want to become. I am here to witness the conventional, uninspiring lives that my fellow suburbanites lead. Being here lights the fire under me, pushing me to strive above them, to be truly extraordinary.
