Jeannette Walls is living in her car with her family for most of the story. She travels with her Mom, Dad, brother and her sister. They’re a very nomadic family and they travel all over the world hiding from the cops. Stealing and fighting for what she believes in becomes part of her everyday life with her dysfunctional family. She has to stand up for herself but hide her doings to avoid getting caught. She often feels like her family doesn’t care about her due to their choices.

She knew they couldn’t get pulled over because her father had stolen plates off of another vehicle. She also saw her parents steal money from a casino in Las Vegas. She learned to fight when the kids started to pick on her in an alley. The first time the girls beat her up, but the second time her brother jumped in and they fought the other girls together. Her family gives her tough lessons in life and they leave her to figure most of it out on her own. Her parents tried to teach her to do the right thing, but it was hard when they continued to show her that doing wrong was okay.Her Father loves his children dearly and wants nothing more than to love them unconditionally like they deserve. He has become an alcoholic and his wife just wasn’t ready to be a mother. He has to force her into loving her family, which leads to him drinking even more. Her father was proud of Jeannette when she came home beat up simply because Jeannette lied and said she’d hurt the other girls worse. He throws Jeannette into the middle of a lake a couple of times to teach her how to swim. He saw it as giving her a helping hand while she was traumatized. In some parts of the book Jeannette cuddles up to her father and I think that shows the relationship between them is really good and he sees her as his baby girl. He just wants to provide for his family, even if it means doing it in all the wrong
