In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the character Jem is the Scouts (the main character's) older brother. Jem is short for Jeremy, Jeremy Àtticus Finch. Jem starts the book as a 10 year old and it ends when heś 12. Jem was a very likeable character who had a great influence in the story. his change/progress was interesting to witness as a reader. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the character Jem has several unforgettable experiences that would change his mind for the rest of his life.

The story starts out with another summer in the Finches home, Macomb Alabama. Then Jem, Scout and their friend Dill all play together. Jem and Scout are best friends, they went everywhere together. The novel states, “Jem put his arm around …show more content…

According to the novel, “Jem was twelve. He was difficult to live with, inconsistent, moody...Atticus said..”Jem was growing. I must be patient with him and disturb him as little as possible,” (115). After the second part begins it is obvious that Scout feels like something has come between them. She Describes Jem’s change as very sudden. Multiple times in one chapter she tells of when Jem tells her she’s not wanted around. Another large part was that Jem starts to make comments about her being a girl. The novel states, “..Jem had acquired an alien set of values and was trying to impose them on me: several times he went so far as to tell me what to do...Jem hollered, “It’s time you started bein’ a girl and acting right!” I burst into tears…” (115). After this there are several times where Jem blames his sisters caution and sense on being a girl. This new idea Jem seems to be getting is most likely coming from school. As Jem explains later he has realized there’s not just “one kind of folks” anymore. Jem’s new opinions about Scout being a girl affect her negatively. She is already being told she needs to act like a lady by others in Maycomb but Jem treating her unjustly for it does not help her
