In the historical fiction, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, it illustrates a black boy [Stacey] hanging out with his friends, a white boy [Jeremy] and a black boy [T.J.]. T.J. and Jeremy are completely different from each other, and it’s their personality. One has a pleasant nature, which is Jeremy, and the other one has an resentful character, which is T.J. In the story, The Logans and the Averys came together to celebrate Christmas after the church services. When they all finished their Christmas dinner, Jeremy knocked on the front door to give Stacey a gift which was a wooden flute. In the excerpt, it claims, “Jeremy nodded slightly as if he did not know how to accept her thanks, and stiffly handed a slender, paper-wrapped object to Stacey. ‘Made this for ya,’ he said. Stacey looked at Papa to see if he should take it. For a long moment Papa studied Jeremy, then he nodded. ‘It-it ain’t much,’ stammered Jeremy as Stacey tore off the wrapping. ‘M-made it myself.’ Stacey slid his fingers down the smooth, sanded back wooden flute.” This proves that Jeremy is a thoughtful friend for giving Stacey a gift, even if Stacey didn 't give anything to Jeremy. Moreover, this confirms that Jeremy is a benevolent and benign friend for giving his time to create the gift. In the book, Cassie was walking along the sidewalk until she bumped into Lillian Jean Simms. Lillian Jean wanted an apology from Cassie, so Cassie politely agreed to say sorry. Lillian Jean wasn’t satisfied, so she wanted Cassie to get down on the road. Nevertheless Cassie denied that command and tried to walk pass her. In the quote, it says, “‘Well apologize,’ she ordered. ‘What?’ ‘You bumped into me. Now you apologized.’ I did not feel like messing with Lillian Jean. I had other things in mind. ‘Okay’ I said, starting past, ‘I’m sorry.’ Lillian Jean sidestepped in front of me. ‘That ain’t enough. Get down in the road.’ I looked up at her. ‘You crazy.’... ‘Ah, let her past, Lillian Jean,’ said Jeremy. ‘She ain’t done nothin’ to you.’” This verified that Jeremy would stand up for Cassie to resolve the conflict . Additionally, Jeremy is showing his heroism on talking back to his sister. In
