Race is a movie about Jesse Owens, who became a sensational young black athlete in track and field in the 1930s while attending Ohio State University. He had a hard life growing up, but fought to make it to the top, using his talent to better his life.
Jesse’s career started in Ohio where he got the chance to further his education and follow his dream in athletics. This is also where he met Larry Snyder, who helped Jesse to be that athlete that everyone will look up to from generation to generation. There were many key points shown in the movie that coaches and athletes can use to build their own growth. From those marvelous moments in college and then the Olympics, Jesse made history.
Knowing an Athlete on a Different Level
Race shows how to build a relationship, trust, and respect between an athlete and a coach. Snyder (coach) asked Jesse (athlete) if he knows how to win and work. Jesse responds with, “Work? I have been picking 100 pounds of cotton every day since I was six years old. Can you? You talk about work?" The coach helped Jesse through the struggles he faced. How to be a better athlete. How to use motivational phrases on how to block out negative thoughts and overcome all the negative people around him. This message from the coach stood out, “You need to block out these negative messages and thought that doesn't help you to do anything better rather than defeat you. They will love you, or they will hate you. Doesn't matter either way, or you’re out there on your own.” Listening to negative messages in our life can defeat us because almost everyone wouldn't continue to follow their dreams. Jesse used that message to overcome the negative energy he was facing in the 100 meters at the starting line at the Olympics
