Few things surpass the difficulties that accompany the overwhelming unknowns, unplanned fighting, and risk of injury on the battle field. To exasperate this pain, many media outlets falsely report on wars and publish stories that glamorize the events instead of telling the truth. As a response to the inaccurate “hype” regarding the war in Iraq, former soldier Jessica Lynch presents a combination of her own stories, emotionally-charged moments in the war, and honest facts to correctly tell her story in her speech “The Truth is Always More Heroic than the Hype;” the mix of these appeals increase the power of her speech. Proving her experience by explaining her feelings regarding her memories, she recollects that, “when I remember those difficult days, I remember the fear. I remember the strength.” The use of anaphora through the repetition of the phrase “I remember” drives the strength of Lynch’s memories into the audience. Because the anaphora highlights the significance of her memories, it, therefore, makes the sentences easier to remember. The inclusion of anaphora solidifies the point that she gained wisdom on the topic of war through her experience. With the gained trust in her wisdom, the speech entirely works to promote belief in truth rather than the falsehoods portrayed by the media. While still showing confidence in her topic, Lynch alludes to this subject by announcing that “the truth of war is not always easy.” After later explanation concerning what this truth entails, the audience can conclude that simply referring the truth as “not always easy” minimizes reality. Through meiosis, her intentional understatement shows that, although she experienced a profusion of pain in Iraq, she chose to modestly explain her story.
