The day Hitler seized power was the miner’s canary to the implementation of a one party controlled state. Thus, Hitler’s trusted confidant Joseph Goebbels assumed his position as the Reich Minister of Propaganda, and led aggressive methods in order to engage ‘unspoiled’ youth into partaking in state sanctioned activities. Thus, students at German institutions were ordered to participate in Nazi book burnings, and pyres at schools around Germany burned hundreds of thousands of books by Jewish, communist, gay, classical, religious, and by state-critical authors. In place of geography lessons, schools were mandated to teach about Lebensraum, which espoused ideas that Aryan land expansion was needed in order for Aryan families to populate and thrive. Furthermore, all teachers required students to delve into Hitler’s Mein Kampf, his autobiography and manifesto, and this caused distrust among critical teachers and their students, which is revealed by Hitler stating, “… It is of paramount interest to the state and the nation to prevent these people from falling into the hands of bad, ignorant, or even vicious educators. Many middle and upper class families who were affluent enough to own televisions would often see children’s cartoons dedicated to teaching youth about state sanctioned anti-semitism and ultra-Aryan-nativism. In one Nazi cartoon, produced in 1944, was aimed toward the French in an attempt to convince little French children that the Allied forces were violent, repressive, and unrelenting. The minute- long cartoon depicted a man with stereotypically Jewish caricatures screaming into the microphone as well as inaccurate anti-American stereotypes such as how dangerous they were and why the children should oppose them vigorously from a young age. By depicting the bombing of London, it was made to strike the fear into the minds of French children who then would have sympathies for the Nazis. In addition, Joseph Goebbels targeted prepubescent and adolescent children with a barrage of posters, videos, and pamphlets which exaggerated the greatness of the Third Reich.
