Judaism began in Israel about 4,000 years ago. Jews believe that there is one god, a monotheistic religion who did not only create the universe but had a relationship both personally and individually with all Jews. The Jewish religious text is the Torah which refers to the five books of Moses and the Hebrew bible which began as early as the tenth century BCE. The Torah is central to Judaism, since many Jews must use it to pray multiple times per day. The five books in english are, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. An important aspect of Judaism is that animals are not considered equal to humans. The Jewish traditions allow animal experiments that may benefit humans as long as unnecessary pain is avoided. There are two stories that depict the split of Judaism and Christianity, the Jewish story and the Christian story. The Jewish story states that Judaism was an ancient religion, received by Moses and preserved by the Jewish people. At some point, Paul followed Jesus to set up a new religion borrowing aspects from Judaism by getting rid of the commandments and mixing in incorrect ideas such as the notion that Jesus was the Messiah. The Christian story states that Judaism was an ancient religion, received by Moses and preserved by the Jews since. At some point, Jesus came and perfected the religion, bringing it to its highest fulfillment. The Jews did not appreciate this and continued to original form of the religion. Both of these stories have a similar part. That is that there are two distinct religions that was invented at some point in time, during the days of Jesus and Moses. But, where they differ is in their evaluation of the second event.
