Harper Lee includes many Jim Crow laws in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Jim Crow laws were racial segregation laws that blacks were expected to follow and respect. A few examples of Jim Crow laws blacks and whites were not suppose to eat together, blacks were not allowed to display public affection toward one another. If a black person was riding in a car driven by a white man he would have to sit in the back of the vehicle (Pilgrim). Harper Lee incorporates many Jim crow laws inside of To Kill a Mockingbird.

They were started to called that by the actor named Jim Crow who was a white man who blacked his face and he danced around and sang about not having a care in the world. The Reconstruction era was the period of time after the civil war after the north triumphed over the south. Things weren’t a smooth transition for the people of the south with many people staying as racists and the creation of hate groups and deadly gangs such as the Ku Klux Klan were rampant after the northern soldiers left the south when reconstruction was over. The treatment of the innocent black people was unfair and unjust.
Tom Robinson was killed not because he didn’t conform into his own race or society but because he paid the price of another person that didn’t conform which was Mayella Ewell. Atticus was intimidated for defending Tom Robinson because he was a black man which wasn’t accepted to do in the white community. When Calpurnia took the children to the first purchase church she wasn’t conforming because of the fact she didn’t follow the way of coloured society. “Let's go home, Cal, they don't want us here". This quotes states the controversy between the coloured and white.
