Is it a sin to kill a mockingbird? It would affect a mockingbird just like society affected Harper Lee because of racism and discrimination. “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us to enjoy. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Society affected Harper Lee in many ways it encouraged her to write To Kill a Mockingbird. A large one that affected her is the Scottsboro trials.
Racism is when a person shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races. This is shown throughout the book, and one example is when Scout and Jem were walking by Mrs. Dubose, and she harshly said “Your father’s no better than the n-word and trash he works for!” She was unhappy that Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. This is compared to the book To Kill a Mockingbird because Tom Robinsccused of rapeing and beating a white women. Atticus is defending Tom Robinson, and all whites are against it. “I'm simply defending a negro his name’s Tom Robinson.” It wasn't so simple, though, if a black man is accused of doing anything to a white women, they are automatically guilty. That's why at first the Scottsboro boys were guilty. This also had a huge impact on Harper Lee. Jim crow laws were laws that “enforced racial segregation” in the southern united states. Segregation is the action of setting someone or something apart from other people or things. For instance, making blacks and whites drink from different water fountains, or use different bathrooms. This has many relations with the book, and one example would be when Cal took Jem and Scout to her black community church. The church didn’t want to treat the white kids with respect and didn’t know why Cal brought them there, Harper Lee probably had been in a situation where blacks didn’t want to treat her fairly
