“Stop a moment, cease your work, look around you”(Tolstoy). These words of Leo Tolstoy perfectly described one thing that human often forget in their busy life. Jim Lynch is capturing these situations where human currently is more focused on their business realistically in his book called The Highest Tide. In this book, it captures an inspiring figure as a main character, named Miles, who has outstanding curiosity and love of nature and sea life. But often times this is where human often forget to take care off, our surrounding that often called nature. Firstly, the main character in this story is portrayed for the reader to look at him as a role model or a set example in which he lives by the theme. In the novel it is written that “It didn’t look like an oarfish at first, but the more I shimmered and the more I studied” (Lynch, 134). This excerpt shows how Miles’s is very sensitive and has a willingness to study the sea life. As the reader can see, Miles is described that he studied that oarfish in terms of curiosity since at first it didn’t look like it. This attitude is sampling on how we should act and that is why he is become the main character here. The act of Miles curiosity and motivate him to learn here serves as an example and a role model too for readers to follow. Furthermore, the response from the other characters emphasizes the importance of the theme. For example, it is written that “The bay continued to attract a strange crowd for days” (Lynch, 195). Throughout the story, the world has been captured realistically and therefore we could see society as a current society. In this case, the act of Miles in the interview and reported on some TV news has brought attention to many people out there. This shows how the influence of being sensitive really important because the author wants to capture how this attitude is lacking and only if people stands out just like Miles then society will be aware of it. By giving the ‘fame’ to Miles the author captures a feeling of acceptance of society to Miles attitude and the more attention he gets it indicates on how the society in desperately needs this lifestyle. Lastly, the main character of the story captures in first person point of view to serve as a real figure to the theme. In the book, it said that “I pointed out striped... I turned over rocks”(Lynch 53). Through just these simple phrases we could see how the use of I showed the book
