In my English class I read the book called Monster written by Walter Dean Myers. It was about a young man called Steve Harmon who was arrested for allegedly being a part of a crime gone horribly wrong, which sadly resulted in a man losing his life. It also spoke about what Steve had to endure throughout that entire process of that trail. In the end even tho Steve knew that the crime will occur he still was found not guilty. I believe that Steve Harmon should have been found not guilty because, he did not give a signal and he also did not receive any part of the money that taken from the robbery.
Ryan Vanderfords’ article published in the Southern California Interdisciplinary Law Journal explores this issue of whether or not college athletes should be paid beyond what they receive in scholarships. Vanderford is currently a law associate at a law firm in Los Angeles, California. He played sports throughout high school and college, so the author can relate to this topic. The payment of college athletes has become a more prominent issue in today’s society then it has been in the past. He argues that at major universities, student athletes help the school generate their revenue and therefore should be paid.
The question still stands. Is Steve Harmon guilty? Monster is a screenplay, written by Walter Dean Myers, in the perspective of a character named Steve Harmon. This book does an exceptional job of expressing Harmon’s thoughts and emotions throughout the trial. In this story, Steve Harmon is a sixteen year old boy, on trial with his neighborhood acquaintance, James King, for the accusation of the robbery and murder of Alguinaldo Nesbitt.
If I were on the jury, I would have voted to acquit Steve Harmon. I would acquit Steve Harmon because he was just a kid and was, if he was apart of the crime at all, probably pressured into it by King. All is Not Fair in Love and War First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is wrong for allowing his infatuation with a girl named Martha to distract him from the Vietnam war and his responsibilities as a lieutenant. Throughout the story, Cross’ thoughts are constantly focused on Martha instead of the war or the men he is charged with leading and ultimately protecting. Because of Cross’ clouded thoughts and poor leadership, Ted Lavender, a soldier in his platoon, is shot and killed.
Tim O’Brien states, “Lavender was now dead, and this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war” (O’Brien 16). In this quote, Tim O’Brien explains that since Jimmy Cross blames himself about Ted Lavender’s death, he will always be in lieutenant’s head. Thus, the lieutenant will always feel the guilt. With this, Tim O’Brien makes the reader think that Jimmy Cross is the person to blame since he is the head of the group and he has to pay more attention to his plans. Having questions about his love, Martha, in his mind instead of being careful about his men is the reason of him feeling guilty that “the lieutenant’s in some deep hurt” (17).
Jimmy Cross is the first lieutenant who carries pictures and letters from Martha, the woman he loves who—sadly—does not love him back. The pictures and letters from Martha symbolize Jimmy’s longing to be loved and comforted. It is ironic that although he is the first lieutenant who is expected to take charge and lead others, yet he never took charge of his own love life. This is a regret and burden Cross carries to the end of the story. “It was very sad, he thought.

For example, in the song he said, “I’ll be your compass so you’ll never feel alone” This is a metaphor because he can’t literally be someone 's compass. This metaphor shows that Joey Graceffa can help guide his boyfriend through life and the difficulties of being able to love anyone. In this particular instance this song is talking about being gay because this was Joey Graceffa’s coming out video.

My considered response is on the poem, “Did I Miss Anything?” by Tom Wayman. This poem is about a teacher that is answering the question, “did I miss anything”. The teacher does answer the question; however they do it in a roundabout, overly sarcastic and exaggerated manner. The teacher shifts from saying they did nothing while the student was absent to saying that they did everything in the next stanza. In my considered response I will explain the poetic devices I found in the poem.
