This week we read and discussed The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. This book is an in depth novel about a human being experiencing grief. So far, we have read books about institutions and cultures of death. However, this is the first book we have read that is a personal experience. The discussion in class about this book was a different feeling than the rest of the books we have discussed.
I felt like it was about a hard working middle class man, who was blinded by wealth and power, I guess that could be considered pride. He sadly forget what was truly important, his family. I do feel that both thoroughly defined their subjects.

Although, they have similarity, the two stories has major differences also. First, both author differs the way they introduce and develop their lead characters to the reader. Second, they also differ in perspective from which their stories are being told. Third, they differs on the choice of settings and how it impact to the stories.
One big similarity is foreshadowing. This took place in both articles, for, “Charles,” an example of foreshadowing is when he had to think who misbehaved and said than finally said, “Charles.” An example of foreshadowing in, “The Lottery,” is when Old Man Warner says, “ Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.” This can indicate that the people of the village are sacrificing a human, which they are.
In my essay I will discuss Frankenstien and “The ones who walk away from Omelas”. A topic I found similar in both of these stories was suffering. The main characters in both stories go through a great deal of pain and suffering whether it be physically or mentally. To me both stories revolve around suffering. I would say they are similar in that way.
