Justin Bartlett Ms.Granitz English 5th hr March 5, 2015 Black History Month; Joe Louis Black history month is in February and is a time to look back at African Americans who made an impact in history and Joe Louis was one of those people. He was one of the best boxers, one that made everything in his life count. The famous boxer was born on May 13, 1914 in Alabama. Louis moved to Detroit in 1924, where ten years later his boxing career began to take off. He won a heavy weight championship and he exploded into the career of professional boxing. At the fight, Louis was not at the best age to be fighting and was told it could be very dangerous. His opponent, MArcian was not a rare boxer, he was a mauler. He seriously hurt people and wanted to maul Joe Louis. The fight would be for 300,000 dollars in American currency. Unfortunately, Joe Louis was beat in the eighth round and was knocked out of the ring. Rocky apologized to Joe later in the locker room and the better man won the fight. After this fight Joe realized that his time was running out for being in the ring. Louis fought against the struggling which is still a problem in this world which is bullying. By giving the people the world’s first ever black to hold a heavy weight title for ten years. Joe Louis was a role model for the black community. In a time when African Americans did not have equal rights and still treated differently, he showed that a black person could become something and do productive things in life. He also lifted all spirits when he defeated James J. Braddok. Though Joe Louis was an amazing boxer, he will still not be the best boxer in the world. Louis was black so back then he did not get the proper respect he deserved. Years later, he now has the recognition and respect he deserved back then. In honor of him, Detroit now has a famously known arena named after him. Louis also has a sculpture of his fist in the middle of downtown Detroit by Cobo Hall.
