Jazz is most often thought to have been started in the 1920s as this explosive movement, but that is in fact not the case. Starting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century many African American musicians have started to explore their taste in improvising, and where better to do that than New Orleans (Anderson). Before the 1920s these jazz musicians have already been going around sharing the unique sound, but up until then, jazz had remained majorly in New Orleans. Arguably one of the very best is Louis Armstrong. Known to be well versed in not only trumpet but also vocals and even composition. Louis Armstrong inspired many people across a wide range. He was so actively involved in everything going on around him. He was one of the only African American musicians who spoke up against political issues, he publically talked about the wrongness of school segregation (Harris). Armstrong performed an astonishing 300 concerts per year on average (Harris). Through his expertise in jazz music Armstrong set the bar for all aspiring musicians, something great to learn from but hard to live up

Nick living in the West Egg describes it as “the less fashionable” Egg compared to the East Egg (Fitzgerald 5). Though right after Nick almost takes it back calling it the most “superficial tag to express the bizarre [...] contrast between them” (5). To help confuse this contradiction Nick describes the houses or “mansions” that surround him. The neighbor to the right had a “tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden” (5). From this description, it’s hard to believe that this is the less fashionable Egg. If the West has marble swimming pools and forty acres of land then what does the East Egg have, golden swimming pools with one hundred acres of land? Nick receives his rent for “eighty dollars a month” proving he is not as high in wealth as all the millionaires that live right next to him (5). Though Nick seems to stay along with all these high people because of his relation with Daisy. Nick gives us an explanation of the difference between the two Eggs. Compared to his home “across the courtesy bay” was where the “white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water” were located. From this description, Nick is seen as viewing two different types of America. There is the middle west culture and the high stuck up east coast culture.
