Coming up with a philosophy of education is a daunting task, as it is something I question and enhance every day. As a student I wondered what the point of education was in the first place, why did I need to sit there and make a report on the ancient Egyptians or why I had to make a pamphlet about a country of my choosing. And now as a teacher I question why I am giving my students this assignment, what do they have to gain from me talking about the life cycle of a star?
A quote that really spoke to me from John Dewey’s Experience and Education was “The most important attitude that can be formed is that of desire to go on learning.” (Dewey, pg. 48). I feel as a teacher it is my job to instill some sort of curiosity in the students, in …show more content…

That is when learning will live forever in their minds, and unconsciously not only learn the content but also develop critical thinking skills. Personally, I agree with Dewey in not disowning one method and I also believe in a hybrid method of progressive and traditional method. Nodding’s quote “In education, what we reveal to a student about himself as an ethical and intellectual being has the power to nurture the ethical ideal or to destroy it” (Noddings, p. 224) really stood out to me as I have witnessed this happening in my practicums. In my high school practicum I had my MT tell me that she makes sure she “cautions” or rather scares the students so that anyone who is not serious about the course or not ready to put in the work drops out because she can’t handle those students. This technique has worked because the student she wanted to drop out of her class did end doing so and since I was new and not really in a position to be giving her advice I didn’t say anything but nod along. Rather than trying to get to the source of the problem and working with him it was easier to dismiss
