John Keats was an English Romantic poet. He was a main figure of the romantic poets. Specifically the second generation, along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, although his work was only published four years before his death, he became well known for his time and began gaining more recognition over time. Keats only lived to be 25 but still managed to have many of his poems published. During his lifetime his poems were fairly well known, but his reputation continued to grow after his death, by the end of the 19th century, he had become one of the most beloved English poets of all time. Keats lost his parents at an early age. He was eight years old when his father was killed after being trampled by a horse. This helped form his views and understanding of the human mortality, and all of its suffering that comes with loss. This tragedy and others helped ground Keats' poetry which gained its effect from human emotion. Keats’ poetry has had a significant impact on a wide variety of poets and writers. I chose Keats beacuse his poetry is characterised by sensual imagery. This is typical of romantic poets, as they aimed to exaggerate emotion through the use of natural images.
