Saint John Paul II was well known for his awe inspiring quotes as well as his heroic way of living. The Communists were harsh on the people of the Church. They limited the materials the church could use, imprisoned many priests and nuns, and promoted a materialistic way of living. During this time of oppression, Karol was ordained a priest. The Communists were worried about Karol's positive impact on building up the Church. They quickly sent out secret officers to spy on what he was doing. Karol found out what these people were trying to do, so he read as much as he could about the Communist so he new their strengths and weaknesses. He was said to know communism better than the actual government leaders themselves. Karol would often take groups of people into the woods with him to teach them the way of the LORD. He lessened their belief in communism while strengthening their faith in God and Jesus Christ (Evert 28-57). In his lifetime, the Holy Father had been seen by half a billion people, traveled 775,000 miles, and been to 129 different countries. Instead of being in a rush to stay on schedule like most people, Pope John Paul II took his time and did whatever he thought was necessary to bring others closer to God. He was also unique in his love for skiing. He often snuck out of the Vatican City to test out the slopes. In his time as pope, he had a great sense of humor that brought him closer than to those around him (Evert 67-80). After serving the third longest pontificate in history, Pope John Paul II died on March 30, 2005. Skipping the usual five year wait, the Holy Father was canonized shortly after his death (Evert 202-205). Saint John Paul II had served a heroic life which sent him throughout the world meeting many different people.
