John Proctor is a respected farmer in the play The Crucible. The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials of 1692-1693. The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller wrote it to parallel the 1950s McCarthyism with the 1692s issue of witchcraft. John Proctor is against the widely agreed upon opinion in Salem about the witch trials, the conflicts that rose with this ultimately result in his death. During the time of the witch trials there was a lot of tension and suspension among the townsfolk. He has conflicts with Reverend Parris, because of the man’s constant preaching of hell. He also views the man as greedy and selfish, he believes that the reverend only cares about his social standing in the village. Reverend Parris views John as a member of a faction trying to usurp his power. John also has conflict with Thomas Putnam. This started with Thomas arguing with John about John cutting lumber on his supposed land that he inherited from his grandfather. John replies that he bought the land from Francis Nurse, and told Putnam that his grandfather had a habit of claiming land that wasn’t his. John also had conflict with Reverend Hale. This conflict starts when Reverend Hale visits his house to question John and his wife Elizabeth’s christian character. Hale insinuates that their “christian armor” may be chinked by their misdemeanors against the church. It gets worse when Elizabeth states that if she is being accused a witch there must not be any, which goes directly against the bible. The conflict reaches its head when Elizabeth is arrested. John also has multiple internal conflicts. The one he struggles with the most is his guilt and sin which stems from his affair with Abigail Williams. This causes him multiple problems in the play.
