In the novel The Outsiders, Johnny Cade is a hero because he protected people he cared for and people who were strangers. He cared for everyone and he had great inner strength. Heroes are people who protect others and who care about people other than themselves. Heroes are kind, humble, brave, caring, and confident. “A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength but by the size of his heart.” -Unknown First of all, he protected himself and others, some were friends, some were strangers, and some were enemies. When the Socs were drowning Pony, Johnny didn’t run away when he had the chance, he stayed and got rid of the Socs so they wouldn’t kill Pony. Johnny Cade was brave and he knew he couldn’t just leave Pony and that he had to protect him. Also, when Dallas Winston was harassing Cherry and Marcia at the drive-ins, Johnny protected them and stood up for them and he made Dally stop. Johnny knew that the right thing to do was to help them. He didn’t care that they were Socs he still wanted to help. Now you can see how Johnny Cade protected everyone no matter who they were. He didn’t care if it was the gang or random people, he cared. When the church was on fire and there was kids trapped inside, Johnny ran into the church to save them and get them out. Johnny knew that he could’ve died when he ran into the fire but he cared about the little kids anyways and went to get them. Also, when Johnny and Pony were in the church, Johnny remembered how Pony wanted the book Gone With The Wind, so he went and got it for him. Johnny remembered that small little detail about the book and it made a difference in what happened. Remembering that showed how much he cared for Pony.
