In the Giver, the writer, Lois Lowry reveals the theme through talking about an old profession in being the receiver of memory.. The theme of tradition is reinforced in the Giver through the character development of Jonas, a young boy chosen to do the job of the receiver. Jonas is chosen to be the receiver of memory a job in which he is given memories from, “Before the previous receiver and generations before him,”(77). This quote reveals how even having a receiver of memory is a very old tradition as it is said that they have been there for generations.
He also commented that people had said that she asked for release, the memories were transmitted to the citizens, leaving them with pain and anger, also the giver was left with a little sadness and anger too. Jonas thought that he would never disappoint the giver, also he would never ask for release, but still he felt lonely
The Giver was the only one who could relate with Jonas and understand his pain and also his happiness as he received each memory. Wihout The Giver, Jonas would have not been able to complete his task. Although it was The Givers job to give relate painful memories to Jonas he also tried to give Jonas happy memories even giving him his favorite memory of grandparents and
Jonas then said “I liked the feeling of love”. (pg. 170) After training Jonas wanted to see if the emotion, love, still had its meaning. He asked his father a "meaningless" question. “Do you love me?” (pg. 171)

Jonas’ Hardships Lois Lowry, the author, wrote a novel titled “The Giver” which took place in a dystopian society with ideas like climate control, sameness, and precision of language. The main character, Jonas, was selected for the assignment “The Receiver of Memory” and this assignment caused him many hardships. Throughout the story, Jonas faces many hardships related to his assignment, his friends, and the community. The theme to the story is overcoming obstacles because Jonas has to conquer many hardships throughout the novel.
Jonas had just had his first crush in his dream called stirrings. So to get rid of them they take pills and this shows that the people don't have feelings for anyone. So The giver proves that things are not always what it looks like.
The Giver then told Jonas he would be glad to share that memory with him. He transmits the memory of a christmas morning, grandparents and love. Jonas liked the memory and wanted to be able to feel it all the time. When Jonas got home he asked his parents if they loved him, They were a little fluster about the word love and told him to pay attention to his precision of language. His father told Jonas that the word love is absolutely meaningless.
One memory change that. Jonas saw the Giver’s favorite memory. The memory was about Christmas. It showed love, warmth, and grandparents. At the end of the book Jonas became affectionate.
Clear examples of this are shown when Jonas checks if the voice recorder is on, then whispers; “I liked the feeling of love, I wish we still had that.” This shows that love is not an emotion that is present in families from the community. The COE has achieved this by making families assigned, not allowing people the feeling of having a real family. This takes away parts of what makes the citizens human, successively dehumanising them as a form of government power. Additionally, the people in the giver still want normal human things, but due to generations of living in the community and a lack of education, they do not know what they truly want.
One of the main themes in “The Giver” is the importance of individuality. The people in the community are not given any freedom to be individuals. They are not allowed to be different, and this creates less understanding of the world. This is why the community needs a receiver to understand these things for them.
Jonas felt anger for his father and the pain he feels for the baby twin. On page 168 in the giver,Jonas realized that they been playing a game of war ( Lowry). Jonas feel sad and misunderstood for the boy in war. Jonas sadly understood that no one know what he is feeling. These are like real life because some careless people don 't think about others and think that everything is just a joke.
The Perspective Of Jonas What would you do if in a futuristic society selected to hold all the memories of the world and your community. But what if you knew there were some painful memories? The Giver By Lois Lowry which is a fiction. The characters are Jonas, Gabe, Mother, Father, Asher, Fiona, Rosemary, the Giver, the Chief Elder, and the committee of elders. Jonas thought that his community was perfect until he figured out they killed people and were totally okay with that.
In Jonas’s society memories are held by one person, The Giver. The Giver is selected by The Committee of Elders after being observed very closely; The Giver is the one who holds all the pain so the people of the community don't have to feel them. According to the novel, the narrator states, “‘Jonas was identified as a possible Receiver many years ago. We have observed him meticulously. There were no dreams of uncertainty”’(Lowry 62).
