Chief Joseph was one of the many tribes that was forcefully removed from their lands,and was one of the many that rebelled,even though he did not succeed he reminds us to fight for our beliefs???? Joseph or young Joseph was born in Wallowa Valley, Oregon on March 3, 1840. His father was Tuekakas or Joseph the Elder and his mother was Khapkhaponimi. He had several brothers and sisters. Little is known about Chief Joseph’s childhood, but we knew he grew up in Nez Perce tribal territories.
After Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory he commissioned the Corps of Discovery which was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. We were on a fact finding mission to find a Northwest Passage, become friends with the Native Americans and tell them that America now owns the land, and collect information about plants and animal. The trip began in May of 1804 from St. Louis traveling to the Pacific Ocean and in September of 1806 we returned to St. Louis. On September 7,1804 we ran into an animal we named a prairie dog.
After crossing to Alaska fifteen thousand years would pass before the flow of nomads finally slowed and stopped on the barren rocks of Patagonia. The migrants belonged to either of two distinct families: Indian or Inuit. They resembled each other in the colour of their skin which ranged from brown to yellow but not red. The First Nations owed their allegiance to their family, their band, their village, their tribe and in the case of several tribes, their confederacy. Families grew into clans and clans into tribes and depending on their access to good hunting and fishing.
Indigenous groups, and their relationships to the land and the environment, are connected deeply to the core. Land and environment is a part of their identity, and is rooted in their culture and history. Innu tribe, which sometimes are called Montagnais, or Naskapi, are aboriginal peoples, who are located in areas of Quebec and Labrador. Montagnais, which is translated in French as mountain people. It relates to the people who live in forested, more southern communities.
Extra Credit: Iroquois Legends and Myths: A psychotic Onondaga chief named Todadaho was a cannibal who ate from bowls made out of the skulls of his victims. He could kill with only a Medusa like look. After this two heroes entered, they were Deganawidah and he then encountered a violent, cannibalistic Onondagan chief. According to the legend, Deganawidah watched through a hole in the roof and in which he saw Todadaho preparing to cook his latest victim.

Native American Research: Chief Pontiac Intro Chief Pontiac is a Native American that is important to the United States’ history. He was a part of the Ottawa tribe and led the American Indians to a revolution also known as the Pontiac War or Pontiac’s Rebellion, which was against the British when they first came to America. He wasn’t afraid to die for his rights. He believed that they all had rights to live in America and to live how they wanted to live. I chose him for my Native American Research because he was a courageous Native American hero.
Joseph Grew was born May 27,1880 in Boston, MA and died May 25,1965. He was the son of Edward Sturgis Grew, a wool merchant, and Annie Crawford Clark Grew. Grew attended Harvard after graduating from a boys preparatory school “Groton”. Grew married Alice Perry and had 4 daughters. His first job was as a clerk at the American consulate in Cairo, Egypt.
In the late 1830’s, where the United States was growing rapidly, whites faced an obstacle while trying to settle in the South. This area of land was home of the Cherokee and other Indian tribes. The Cherokee Indians signed treaties hoping that white settlers would not come for their land. Prompted by the state of Georgia along with the president, Andrew Jackson, whom did not like Indians, expelled the Cherokee Indians from their homeland. Cherokee’s pleas to Georgia and the Supreme Court did little to stop their removal.
Frontiersmen People first came to America because it is “the land of opportunities” and they want to escape from the control of their government. The east coast was the beginning of the frontier experience when the first settlers came there and when the last western land settled that was the end of the frontier. Because of the harsh life in the frontier and the people who lived there had to do everything by themselves, so they have to be self-reliant. The self-reliant frontiersman who Americans made them the American male hero; this kind of male hero had a strong body and rugged because of the condition of the frontier life. One of the biggest and most powerful tribes in South Carolina was the Cherokee tribe. The were also known as the “real people”. THe Cherokee tribe was huge. Just one village could have over 600 people in it, and most of their villages were lined with a thing called palisade surrounding it for protection. Their leaders could be made up of men and women, and either gender could own land.
Iroquois Confederacy was an association of five tribes named Mohawk, Oneida, Onandaga, Cayuga, Seneca. The conference was characterized by a peaceful pact between the tribes. In 1700, the Tuscarora tribe joined to the confederacy making the Six Nations Iroquois. Each tribe was compound by two moieties, and each moiety was compound by one or more exogamous clans. Around the 1800s, the United Stated government was trying to figure out a way to remove the Indian tribes such as the Seminole, Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw from the southeast. Many American settlers wanted to remove the Indians there because they sawDuring President Jackson 's term of office, he signed the Indian Removal Act on May 28, 1830. This Indian Removal Act, President Jackson let to grant unsettled lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. There were tribes that left their lands peacefully; however, many other Indian people refused to relocate. In the fall and winter of 1838 and 1839, one of the tribes known as Cherokees were forcibly moved west by the government.
Throughout the history of the United States, there generally have been dozens of particularly social movements, which is fairly significant. From the African American Civil Rights Movement in 1954 to the feminism movement in 1920, protests for all intents and purposes have helped these groups basically earn rights and fight injustice in a really major way. Some injustices that these groups face range from lack of voting rights to police brutality, or so they essentially thought. The indigenous people of North America aren’t actually immune to these injustices, basically contrary to popular belief.
