The name "Seminole" came about from the tribe's original name of yat'siminoli meaning "free people". That was the name the Seminoles had referred to themselves as because of their refusal to be conquered and converted by the "white man". The Seminole Tribe has long had a unique history with both the land of the Southeastern United States, and with the government of the United States. Their relationship with the land has been drastically altered as the result of three Seminole wars which displaced and relocated the Seminole tribe. As a result of the persecution by President Andrew Jackson, members from a variety of tribes in the Southeast United States began migrating into Spanish Florida to seek refuge.

Having been born and bred outside the United States, the city I grew up was more influenced by the people of India rather than Native people. Therefore, I began to search the Internet for Native tribes where I came across the Duwamish tribe. The Duwamish tribe lived in Seattle, Washington from the past 10,000 years, making them one of the oldest Native tribes that we know of in the entire world. Today, the Duwamish tribe are one of the few federally recognised Native tribes. In this research project I intend to gain a better understanding as to how a Native tribe that has existed since the glacier age has escaped being eradicated through both wars and disease.
The Iroquois Confederacy, also named League, is the organization of six tribes, including Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora, which lived in the northeastern woodland and shared common culture and language. At that time, Deganawidah, a man came from Huron in the north, travelled among the Iroquois and, through roof hole, he saw a man prepared to cook a victim. That man, later in his lodge, met Deganawidah and was persuaded by the powerful words of righteousness and peace from Deganawidah. As a result, he helped to spread Deganawidah’s message as a loyal follower who Deganawidah named Hiawatha meaning

Myths of the Cherokee, by James Mooney, is packed with wonderful Cherokee folklore tales. There are numerous fantastic legends dating back to the early Cherokee days, ranging from creation myths to wonder stories and beyond. Whilst each story is distinct and intriguing in its own right, the spotlight will be attracted to two in particular: “The First Fire” and “The Deluge”. "The First Fire" presents the tale of Kănăne′sk Amai′yh, a little water spider who accomplished what no other larger animal could. The water spider was able to restore fire to the animal community after the flame went out on a frigid night, which no other creature was able to do (Mooney 239).
As we all know, Native Americans have suffered greatly within their culture and are still struggling in society today even though this is their land. To celebrate these people and to remember their ancestors, Native American history month is in November. Note: When I do history month activities I plan on doing the ethnic/race group that whole month so these are only a few ideas that I will be including in my classroom. One simple and fun activity I found is a song about these Native People. It is a learning song that I found on this website here.
The Navajo people have a had a long, tumultuous, history with the United States. For the longest time however, the Navajos’ relationship with the United States was not what defined the Navajo people. The Navajo lead a relatively peaceful life until they made contact with neighboring tribes, and the sudden appearance of strange foreigners near their lands. Before contact was made with outside peoples, the Navajo mostly functioned as a hunter-gatherer society. This nomadic lifestyle was the commonplace until the Navajo met the Pueblo people.
On July 17, 1830, the Cherokee nation published an appeal to all of the American people. United States government paid little thought to the Native Americans’ previous letters of their concerns. It came to the point where they turned to the everyday people to help them. They were desperate. Their withdrawal of their homeland was being caused by Andrew Jackson signing the Indian Removal Act into law on May 28, 1830.
The author of The Cherokee Removal, Theda Perdue, says on page 169 in the book, “ Only two years after their arrival, the Cherokees were tilling fields, sending their children to school, and attending Council meetings. Although there was political turmoil and considerable violence, the lives of most Cherokees seemed to be returning to normal.” The Cherokee had experienced a strong amount of pain together and are stronger and working together to overcome their

In Need of Help Americans are often not aware of what is going on outside of the United States; however, just as third-world countries suffer from a lack of necessities, so does our own nation. What has recently been brought to the author 's attention that she is now putting on the table – what is occurring in the Navajo Nation? The beautiful and vast Navajo Nation “extends into the states of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, covering over 27,000 square miles” (Navajo Nation 's DIT). F1.
The Apache were a strong, fierce, war-like nation, native to the arid deserts of the Southwest (specifically Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma). And since 1492, the discovery of the Americas, the Apache fiercely opposed Spanish, Mexican, and American invasions. Arguably, they are most known and most remembered for their association with the Spanish, Mexicans, and Americans; the relationship between the Apache and the settlers that led into the Mexican and American conflicts and the aftermath of that, by how westward expansion in the United States affected the population of the Apaches and then how the laws during the 1800s influenced the forced removal of the Apache. These reasons show the relationship the settlers had with the Apache.
