Achebe’s novel is very different from Heart of Darkness. In Conrad’s story, we follow a white man and his journey through Africa. This book is also divided into three parts. One thing that is very interesting in this story is the narrator. The story is told through one of four people who sit and listen to Marlow, who is narrating the whole story.
Patrick Brantlinger criticizes Heart of Darkness for Conrad being incredibly ambiguous with his writing, thus creating an opening for many interpretations of his book. Consequently, it will not be truly known what Conrad’s political stance upon imperialism as a whole, however, Conrad’s use of anti-sematic language does show that he was influenced by the political climate in England at the time. Furthermore, “But the facts of exploitation in the Congo are perhaps less distressing to them than the lying idealism which disguises it,” thus, Brantlinger believes that Conrad was less worried about the impacts of the Congolese, but the lying propaganda that flooded Europe during the scramble to Africa (307). Also, “But the difficulty with this ingenious
Conrad had poor health and he didn’t do well at school. His illness was clearly of nervous origin. He didn’t show much interest to study. In 1971, when thirteen year old, Conrad announced that he intended to become a sailor.
Hunt Hawkins presents the controversy that Joseph Conrad’s, Heart of Darkness, encounters, as its contents portray Africans as dehumanizing, savage, and uncivilized beings. In order to provide a sufficient amount of information with regards to the controversy, Hawkins introduces the analysis of distinct scholars to describe racism, imperialism, and human nature. As a result, an analysis of the characters are provided to the audience and allow an individual to understand why Conrad decided to write Heart of Darkness the way he did. Conrad uses psychological influence throughout the novella specifically in the areas of, physical health, geographical surroundings, and eerie obsession to lead to the overall truth of madness. An image of such madness is apparent through Conrad's works of psychological influence within physical and mental health. The mental well-being of the characters,
With the imperialistic drive being a bigger motive for Europe, he could depict the harshness of the Victorian Era class system in his novel Heart of Darkness. Not only were the effects of the class system that made it dangerous, but also how easily it can spread. These themes are present in Heart of Darkness due to the Victorian Era being one of the worst time periods for class diversity. Also, Conrad presented the story from the point of view of a white man, or Middle Class worker, just so the reader can see what goes on directly below and above him in the social hierarchy. While there has always been a class system for all types of societies, the Victorian Era may be the worst since the poverty problems at the time gained little attention, yet a numerous amount of people fell victim to it.
I concur with the opinion that Joseph Conrad’s portrayal of Africans is considered racist due to how Conrad merely describes and portrays their characters. Most if not all their descriptions and actions are flat descriptions of how the Africans are barbaric or monstrous. For example, while describing an encounter with the Africans Conrad writes “When one had got to make correct entries, one comes to hate those savages- hate them to death.” Rather than discuss the Africans reasons for defending themselves from European imperialism, he portrays them as savages. I disagree with the idea that Joseph Conrad’s portrayal of Africa and Africans is racist due to the fact that this is a narrative based off of other information or rather, and other narrative.
LANGUAGE TECHNIQUE USED IN JOSEPH CONRAD’S HEART OF DARKNESS ABSTRACT The nineteenth century has been called "the age of the novel", as the last of the major forms of literature to appear. The novel was one of the most fluent, diverse, and unpredictable of literary forms. It was the dominant literary form which reached its apotheosis in the Last century. The novel may seem modern but is historically related to other literary forms such as drama and the epic.
Out of the three novels we read for the Modern Fiction class, the one I favoured most is Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. At first I thought I would hate it, because it indeed has a very unattractive appearance, and the subject did not interested me either. When I started to read, it was still somewhat boring. However, with my experience with every other book I’ve ever read, I was aware most novels have a boring and uncompelling beginnings, and pushed myself to leave those parts behind. As I read, it became compelling, and the light air with which Marlow told his story started to make me love the narration.
Biswas argue that Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness has
Another example that Conrad uses to show how imperialistic ideology might have an effect on an individual mental health is the story about of the man that killed himself. Marlow, after boarding a French steamboat that would take him the rest of the way to his posting, learns about the man that hung himself from the captain of the steamboat. The captain tells Marlow that it could simply be that “the sun too much for him, or the country perhaps”. However, Conrad is trying to show that imperialism and its ideologies are destructive forces to an individual’s mental
