The Heart of Darkness tells the story of one sailor’s long journey in the Congo. Marlow had always wanted to explore the unknown. He looked forward to the adventure and the discoveries to come. Naturally, when he got the opportunity to do so he jumped right in. He immediately went to the company’s headquarters and signed the proper paperwork. Not long after was he sent off into the seas with the destination of the Congo. Throughout this voyage, Marlow sees and experiences many things people should go their whole lives without encountering. He is unprepared for these catastrophic events and his moral limits are tested. During his time working for the company, he encountered many people. I feel that not everyone is going to uphold the same set of moral standards due to their life experiences. If someone grows up worshiping god through the Christian religion, their standards and beliefs are going to be much different than someone who grew up being an atheist. Not only am I taught morals through the teachings of god but also through my parents. Different parents have different ways of teaching their children as well as different sets of morals they teach. Parents have a big influence on a child’s life so their teachings are most likely something the children will uphold as well. However, that might not always be the case as morals are subjective they are going to reflect the individuals personal feelings on the subject at hand. I differ from Marlow as I do not feel that right and wrong depend on the situation. I believe that the particular set of morals each individual upholds determines what is right or wrong. I do not believe it is right to go against your morals and sin in order to protect someone else. I also believe that there are certain actions that are known as right or wrong through human nature and are rooted in individuals through societal influences. For example, most individuals would say that it is not morally correct to steal or commit a crime. It does not mean everyone will follow it but self-consciously most people would know whether the action was right or
