Starting in 1929, Joseph Stalin took leadership of the United Soviet Socialists Republic or more commonly known as the USSR. “Stalin was trying to prevent Nazism while at the same time trying to modernize his Russia (Joseph Stalin Biography)”. Stalin used terror to rule over his country. It is said that millions of his own citizens died while he was in power due to the way that he ruled (History.com Staff). Joseph Stalin had a difficult childhood. His father, an alcoholic, beat him as a child. His family was poverty-stricken. He contracted small pox as a boy, leaving scars on his face and all over his body. He was also in an accident when he was young, which caused his arm to become deformed (Joseph Stalin Biography). He created many plans to have the government take over everything. One of the first changes that Stalin made was to create government run farms. Many farmers were not willing to comply with this and so they were executed (History.com Staff). If the farmers did decide they would work at the collective farms, some of the farmers would slaughter all the animals on their own farm and destroy any machines they had in protest.
