When looking back on the famous Jazz Artists of all time, names like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Billy Holiday come to mind. As you can see, all three of these names belong to men. Yes, women did have a large influence on jazz music, and there are some very famous women jazz artists, but during this time period men seemed to dominate the jazz field. One women jazz artist that many people may not be familiar with is Josephine Baker. Not only was Josephine Baker a famous dancer and singer in France during the 1920s but she also devoted much of her life to fighting the war on racism (Haberman, Louck) Freda Josephine McDonald (Josephine Baker) was born on June 3, 1906, in St. Louis, Missouri to her parents Carrie McDonald and Eddie Carson. Princesse Tam-Tam was a written by Pepito Abantino and is considered a comedy and drama due to its interesting storyline. Josephine is cast as Alwina, a beautiful barefoot hill shepherdess. This leading role illuminated Josephine as the prominent, and famous star that she was.
