Many struggle with the importance of both the journey and the destination because they work together. If the journey is not appreciated, the destination lacks significance when it is reached. In “ The Falling Girl” by Dino Buzzati the character Marta struggles with reaching her destination while forgetting to enjoy her journey. Her relationship with the setting and time indicate that her desire to reach her destination will lead to her death. She is drawn towards a fall from a skyscraper so that she can reach the party of her dreams, but as she falls she ages and is afraid she will run out of time. Marta’s main concern is reaching the party before too much time passes, but unfortunately as the sun sets she begins to lose her youthful glow. It is important to Marta that she enjoys the party while she is young, but she begins to compare herself to other girls as she falls. “ It was a contest, then. And she only had a shabby little dress while those other girls were dressed smartly like high fashion models,” (Buzzati 3). In the beginning the sun reflects well on Marta and reveals her true beauty, but eventually the sun sets. Marta’s insecurities are now shown through the darkness and as time passes she begins to wither away. “Alas, she wouldn’t reach the ball in time. Glancing upwards she saw the pinnacle of the skyscraper in all its cruel power. It was almost completely dark”(Buzzati 2). Not only does this quote show Marta’s viewpoint towards the building but it also portrays how darkness represents her demise.
