Every Ray Bradbury character has a few common characteristics. These are the fact that their life is overall undesirable and they are involved in some kind of conflict. Some examples of the character’s lives being undesirable would be Montag’s life as a fireman in Fahrenheit 451 and the house from “There Will Come Soft Rains”. Both of these characters, though happy, their lives are undesirable. Montag lives in a world where there is heavy government censorship and he has limited knowledge of history. This is shown in the quote “They walked still farther and the girl said, ‘Is it true that long ago firemen put fires out instead of going to start them?’ ‘No. Houses have always been fireproof, take my word for it.’” To further prove this point …show more content…

The conflict of “Dark They Were and Golden Eyed” is revealed in the quote “Bittering wanted to cry. ‘You’ve got to work with me. If we stay here, we’ll all change.’” The conflict is the fact that Henry believes that if he stays on Mars that he will be changed and molded by the planet and lose his Earthly qualities. “All Summer in a Day” has a much more personal conflict. Margot wants to see the sun on one of the days it is to come from behind its veil of clouds. This is prevented by a group of kids that bully her and lock her in a closet. “They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door.” Furthermore, in these examples it is evident that these characters frequently meet tragic ends. Such as Henry from “Dark They Were and Golden Eyed”, Margot from “All Summer in a Day” and the house from “There Will Come Soft Rains.” Henry becomes a Martian losing his Earthly qualities despite his best efforts. Margot gets forgotten and left in the closet so that she misses the sun coming out. Finally, the house burns down and instead of saving itself wastes its energy trying to get its dead owners to
