J.R.R Tolkien “It was, pity, that stayed in his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need” (Kilby p. 169) J.R.R. Tolkien wrote in his book. Tolkien was an inspiring author and the way he imagined his stories was very unique. J.R.R. Tolkien’s influence in his novels was derived from legends from many hundreds of years ago, such as Beowulf. Other examples are the narratives from the Norse myths, which include fascinating folktales. Day, n.a. - a.k.a. Tolkien most definitely amused himself as he researched his tales. Tolkien’s backstory really added character to himself and his whole life. J.R.R. Tolkien was born in South Africa on January 3, 1892. When J.R.R. Tolkien was four years old, and moved to Burmingham, England with his family. (Hammond, April 19, 2024) This is where Tolkien stayed most of his life. Tolkien and his brother were not even the age to go to school. Tolkien’s life was very unique and inspiring, and it still is. He became a part of Oxford University but later joined the army during World War I where it was thought he wouldn’t survive due to his gentle nature. But Tolkien actually outlived his friends, and came back from war as a changed man. The experience of battle left him scarred, and his only consolation was his writing. Tolkien left this world on September 2, 1973 (Hammond, April 19, 2024) at eight-one years old due to a stomach ulcer. J.R.R. Tolkien died in Bournemouth, Hampshire, England, just two years after his wife met her end. Tolkien stayed strong till the very end, still full of imagination. J.R.R.
