In the story The Hobbit there are many different characters like Bilbo Baggins, and Gandalf The Great. There are many characters, the author portrays each of them differently through dialogue. One characters Thoren ii Oakenshield, son of the Thrain son of Thoror. He has many scenes when he is a good and wise leader, and others when he is a foolish and selfish leader. He is selfish with money and wealth when he tries to find the Arkenstone.
Bilbo’s beliefs throughout his life before his great adventure were fairly narrow-minded. He believed that having an extravagant home with the approval of his neighbors was extremely important. Doing anything out of the ordinary was unexpected out of Mr. Bilbo Baggins as he was very predictable in all his actions. As mentioned in the book, you could tell what a Baggins would say even before he answered your question. I believe that Bilbo always had the same beliefs throughout the book, but that some came out clearer in different situations.
Lastly, I would like to briefly mention how the yard sale of Bilbo’s property as he returned home slightly resembles the end of The Odyssey, where the hero Odysseus returns home after much traveling to many unkind strangers crowding his wife and home. Bilbo, too, had to metaphorically fight to reclaim what was his from the many people to whom his properties had been sold.
Many authors such as, J.R.R Tolkien, use their writing to get entertain, inform, or persuade. While writing the author may put their own opinions in a book or novel. By including a character with certain traits they believe to be viewed in a positive light or they may include a character that has traits they view in a negative light. Tolkien also shows two sides he feels may be needed for a journey like this,physical strength and intelligence. Intelligence is more important and Tolkien shows what he feels is positive through Bilbo the main character and negative through Bilbo’s enemies.
When people go places and step out of their comfort zones, sometimes they come back a different person. In The Hobbit, Bilbo is an ordinary hobbit, but after his adventure, it is apparent that Bilbo is now a hero. Three events that occur that show this transformation are when Bilbo jumps over Gollum, when Bilbo slays a spider, and when Bilbo travels to the Elvenking and Bard in order to make peace. The moment Bilbo leaps over Gollum demonstrates to the reader how Bilbo is beginning to go from hobbit to hero.

He helps the band of dwarves trick the nefarious spiders, escape from the magical elves, and finally assign himself the responsibility to talk face-to-face with the dragon Smaug. Although Bilbo had never been on adventure or fought monsters, faced his dilemmas with sensible activity.

Then he tries to get out of the cave and finds the ring in the process. After finding the ring, he encounters Gollum. He and Gollum play a puzzle game to decide whether to eat Bilbo or show the way.
