The dwarves discover something that they didn’t think would happen when they first started onto their adventure, they have relied on Bilbo more than once to get them out of a sticky situation. The dwarves, first heart broke when they hear that Gandalf was leaving them, didn’t think that Bilbo was a worthy burglar to bring onto the trip, believing that he had caused the trip to slow more than necessary. Bilbo’s long and perilous journey with the dwarves’ taught him that he does not have to live a life that is considered “respectable” by his neighbors. Bilbo could have adventures and make a difference while still being himself. “Bilbo was no longer quite respectable… He was held by the hobbits of the neighborhood to be ‘queer.’ I am sorry to say, he did not mind.
The “hero’s Journey” begins with a call to an ordinary individual to leave the ordinary world. This calls prompts the individual to leave the common life to venture into the realm of the unknown. The journey continues with the individual leaving the ordinary world to descend into the special world. The decent into the special world brings the individual through different adventures and experiences that reveal weakness and allow for strength and development to conquer those weaknesses. Bilbo baggins journey represents the “hero’s Journey”as he leaves the ordinary world as an ordinary hobbit,enters the special world as a developing warrior,and returns as an unexpected hero.
In the story “The Hobbit” Bilbo can be seen as the hero when he sacrifices his family’s name to be a part of the quest to get Thorin's gold back Bilbo's first approach is his attempt on stealing the trolls’ treasure. He later is met by the goblins, Gollum, elves, and spiders. Each fear he faces develops Bilbo as a hero, getting him ready for his greatest quest, stealing the treasure from Smaug.. Another example of Bilbo putting others before himself is the treasure he willing to give in order to bring peace to the men, elves, and dwarves. Last, but not least, Bilbo is willing to sacrifice his life for a cause bigger than himself.
Many authors such as, J.R.R Tolkien, use their writing to get entertain, inform, or persuade. While writing the author may put their own opinions in a book or novel. By including a character with certain traits they believe to be viewed in a positive light or they may include a character that has traits they view in a negative light. Tolkien also shows two sides he feels may be needed for a journey like this,physical strength and intelligence. Intelligence is more important and Tolkien shows what he feels is positive through Bilbo the main character and negative through Bilbo’s enemies.
In The Hobbit, there lots of great characters. An archetype explains the characters role in the book such as a hero, the trickster, and many more. Archetypes are great ways to define a character. Every character has a reason to be in the book. Not many people get that deep into thought when they read books, but if you use archetypes it changes the way people think of the book.
Thorin comments that if more of the contentious warriors of the world lived the way hobbits do, it would be a happier world, and Bilbo’s return to Hobbiton seems an acknowledgment of the same idea. Heroism is important in a world beset with evil, but Tolkien suggests that if everyone lived the simple life of hobbits, evil would be obsolete. So, in a sense, Bilbo does belong in Hobbiton, even if he does not in the eyes of the hobbit community. 3 Is Thorin in any sense a heroic leader? Beowulf’s ability to accept Unferth’s apology instead of holding a grudge shows he is forgiving and humble about others. Thorin does a similar thing but in reverse. In The Hobbit, Thorin demonstrates his ability to apologize to others after Bilbo bravely saves Thorin from being killed from his battle with Azog. When they are finally safe from danger, Thorin, realizing his misjudgments, immediately apologizes to Bilbo, stating he was wrong for saying and thinking such negative things about him. Thorin is willing to admit his wrongs and correct them, which is incredibly noble and heroic for a dwarf as Gandalf tells Bilbo they are very prideful and stubborn.

Bilbo is fortunate enough to experience such a peculiar invitation, but the Baggins side of him is quick in refusal. Yet off he still goes from his warm and fuzzy hobbit hole in the Shire to the desolate land of Dain, where he learns to prove his worth amongst his hot-tempered Dwarf companions. Along the way, allies are made, secrets kept and human desires put into play, eventually culminating in the concluding battles where Bilbo plays a pivotal role in the management of order in the fellowship.
Tolkien’s message is just even the smallest deeds and people can do great things. This applies to people in general because even if you are small compared to someone else you may have the bigger heart, and you can change the chorus of the future. The message applies to me because I may be out numbered but if I stay with my heart nothing can mentally get in my way. I liked the book because I could connect with some of the dwarves, like Fili because he is the youngest and he has an over brother, Kili, and i have an over protective sister. I also liked it because I was crying when Thorin died because I am a very sensitive person and Thorin was one of my favorites.
