Each of these post-it notes show the growth of Bilbo Baggins throughout the book. When he meets the dwarves he is meek and not very brave. When he comes up against Gollum he uses his wit and riddles to get away and keep the ring that he has obtained. Bilbo becomes even braver and resourceful when he uses his ring and sword, Sting, to free the company from the spiders. Bilbo begins showing his worth as a burglar when he frees the company and escapes from Mirkwood with them without being caught.
Even though this part of the hero’s journey was portrayed pretty similarly, there is still a bit of a difference. They both used their instincts, but Bilbo was influenced a bit by the dwarves. His Took side had shown while the dwarves were contemplating whether he was fit for the adventure or not. This made him want to prove himself to them. Instincts aren’t normally the cause of the call to adventure, but for some reason, these two very different novels are similar this way.
Bilbo fails to steal a bag from a Troll’s pocket when he was told to observe the red light from the dwarves’ camp. (43) From this failure, the dwarves begin to doubt his usefulness as a burglar, causing him to lose faith in himself. As time progresses, Bilbo proves to the dwarves, especially Thorin, and himself of what he is capable of. He gains confidence with the defeat of each of his enemies.
Bilbo was brave, but not aggressively so. He was loyal, but that did not mean he never had doubts. Bilbo Baggins, of Bag End was an honorable Hobbit. He was also the greatest hero of them all, although he may not seem like it.

Bilbo's life has changed a lot after just one night. One day he was just doing the normal thing and staying at his home, the next day he was pickpocketing a giant, later he was walking on a rock giant in a deadly storm, then he gets into a underground place with an unknown creature. Bilbo has really done something with his old house life. First, Bilbo has never done anything compared to pickpocketing a giant. The dwarves saw a light then told bilbo to go check it out.
This was dangerous because he did not know what it was or what it could be. And when they arrived to the light they saw two big trolls sitting the eating. In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (1977), the main idea is about being brave. As Bilbo Baggins goes on with his adventure, he faces many obstacles. But by being brave, he learns important lessons and becomes a hero. The Hobbit is a novel that consists of adventure, with various events and decisions made. Courage is considered the moral of the story, as throughout the novel readers can see courageousness being pursued.

Another important character in the novel is Gandalf, a wizard and an old family friend, forces Bilbo to come out of his comfort zone onto a journey to recover the dwarves name and gold from the evil dragon, Smaug. Bilbo fulfills the archetypal hero’s journey by starting of an in ordinary world ,facing Ordeal, Death, and Rebirth, and The Road Back while illustrating the theme of innovation.
The journey that Bilbo endures transforms him into a hero. Bilbo encounters many tests and trials throughout the story which reveal character. These courageous actions display the heroic character of Bilbo. Throughout The Hobbit, Bilbo displays the universal message that anyone can develop into a hero. Even the smallest and seemingly weakest creatures and people can become as great as Bilbo.
Bilbo’s Transformation/Maturation Some people say that people never change, while others believe that if given the chance, they will. In this case, J.R.R. Tolkien gives the character Bilbo Baggins the chance to change dramatically in his book The Hobbit. Bilbo undergoes many significant changes in his personality as a result of engaging in Gandalf's journey with the dwarves. The most important transformations include Bilbo going from cowardly to brave, from being ridiculed to respected and from being helpless to resourceful.
After Gollum, Bilbo came upon giant, deadly spiders, that captured him and the dwarves. In the novel, The Hobbit, spiders are described as “He could on see the things eyes, but could feel it's hairy legs….”(Tolkien 143). Bilbo defeated them with a new found confidence when he began teasing them and removing his ring that made him invisible. Furthermore, one of the biggest trials Bilbo found himself in was when he was with Smaug. Bilbo outsmarts Smaug by learning that “No dragon can resist the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time to understand it.
“The blind man who didn’t recover his sight but grew three new teeth, or the paralytic who didn’t get to walk but almost won the lottery, and the leper whose sores sprouted sunflowers…when the woman who had been changed into a spider finally crushed him completely. ” This is a quote from Garcia Marquez’s story A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings. It is an example of magical realism because the angel in this story is first believed to have magical powers that can heal people and once they come to realize that he does not, they replace him with a spider lady who is better in many ways than one. This cannot be real because angels, though religiously accurate, cannot be humans or grant wishes, nor can a human turn into a large spider who can speak.
The book The Hobbit tells the story of an anxious little hobbit, who, throughout the story, progresses to be a hero and a leader who shows bravery and strength and earns the respect of his comrades. There are two prominent themes in this story, one being that bravery comes in all shapes and sizes, and two is that it’s good to try new things. Bilbo’s confidence and strength stem at the beginning of the story in his hobbit hole, and to the end when he and the dwarves defeat the mighty dragon Smaug. When Bilbo first shows signs of interest in joining the dwarves on their adventure, his whole world opens up. When Bilbo outsmarts Gollum, he is proud and strong.
Along the way, they overcome many obstacles that threaten their lives and put their trust for one another to the test. Bilbo learns that there is more to him than he realizes and through hard work and dedication, he can accomplish almost anything. Overcoming these problems and learning more about himself helped Bilbo change from an ordinary, self-doubting hobbit into a clever, courage-filled, loyal hero. In the beginning, Bilbo has no desire to go on an adventure of any kind, but he quickly learns about the cleverness he obtains when he is forced to make quick decisions.
