The first big turning point you'll see in Bilbo is where he meets Gollum in Chapter 5. At the beginning of this chapter, we see Bilbo separated from the group in a cave and see him alone for the first time in a book. Then he tries to get out of the cave and finds the ring in the process. After finding the ring, he encounters Gollum. He and Gollum play a puzzle game to decide whether to eat Bilbo or show the way. Bilbo investigated and found a stream running under the palace, and they put a wooden barrel in it to ship the goods. He decided that this was their escape route. Fortunately, the prison officer fell asleep drunk, and Bilbo was able to take his key and release the dwarves. The dwarves are reluctant at first, but he eventually agrees because that's the only way. They load themselves into the barrels and head towards Laketown. In this chapter we see Biblo develop in two ways: the first way is in his intelligence, and His second way is his leadership. He shows development in intelligence by thinking of ways they can escape and then making it happen. He also shows that he can be a leader by coming up with a plan for all of the dwarves and then leading them towards their
