Compare and contrast the ideas, ideologies and strategies that defined the practices of Judson Dance Theater in the US and British New dance in the UK By Sigourni Alanis Bennetts
In the following essay I will discuss the research I have undertaken in order to compare and contrast the ideas, ideologies and strategies that defined the practices of Judson Dance Theater in the US and British New Dance in the UK. I have gathered the right sources from varied websites in order to evidently provide the correct research.
British New Dance was originally known as the collaborative group of dancers called X6. There main idea to create a piece of movement was to “fuse dance with politics and performance art” Anon (2016) History-Chisenhale Dance [online] [www.chisenhaledancespace.co.uk/about/history]

The group within the classes weren’t all trained dancers, many were individuals such as visual artists, musicians and people with a number of skills. Members of the class wanted to show their works publicly and that is how they formed the Judson Dance Theater through the use of the Judson Memorial church. The experiments the Judson theater played with were strongly influenced by John Cage and Merce Cunningham. Like Cunningham and cage the Judson did many experiments with indeterminate structures and chance. In comparison to British New dance they all questions the form of dance. They also liked to make dance which consisting of fusing ballet with contemporary styles. Key figures that formed the collective consisted of Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, Deborah Hay, Yvonne Rainer and Simone
