In 1588, Queen Elizabeth presented a speech to her people about the Spanish Armada’s attack on England. In 1940, Winston Churchill presents a speech to his house about the new government being formed because of Britain’s involvement in WWII. These speeches are both very similar. They both are called to present an encouraging speech to their people in these hard times. Queen Elizabeth is faced with the battle of the Spanish Armada. She tells her people even though she is a small woman, if she was needed to become the general of her army she would step up and do so. Similarly, Churchill tells his people he will offer everything he has to make sure the country is unified during British’s involvement in WWII. Winston was ordered to form a new administration. He formed a war cabinet of five members. Winston’s strategy was to get this task done in the time span of one day for the safety of the people. He meets with the House and tells them to record its approval of steps taken and to declare is confidence in the new government. Churchill informed them that building a new government was very important but to remember the serious battle that was taking place. He tells his friends and workers to point out his mistakes. Churchill said to the house, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. (28)” He tells the House the next months will be hard but he prays God gives the strength to wage this war. He lets them know that victory is not an option, it is to be done. Churchill tells his men he was hope and he knows they will not fail him. Churchill ends his speech with a sentence on unifying together and waging this war with our combined strength.
