In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road there are several examples of rhetoric used throughout the book. McCarthy uses repetition to emphasize how the two main characters remain ethically moral throughout the book even when faced with adversity. As quoted in the book “carrying the fire” “You have to carry the fire” was a phrase often repeated by the characters to remind them that they were still good. Throughout the book McCarthy uses rhetoric to persuade that even though God is not present, it is visible in the actions of the character. They often encounter others where their morality is tested like when they meet the old man or the man that steals from them, etc. Each time the son persuades his dad to do the humane thing.
Use of Rhetorical Appeals in “Duty,Honor, Country” The effectiveness of rhetorical devices is no better illustrated than in the essay “Duty, Honor, Country” by General Douglas MacArthur. Throughout this piece the tone and opinion is made clear without being heavy handed making the piece infinitely more relatable. MacArthur’s use of the socratic appeals(Ethos,Pathos and Logos), not only makes the reader contemplate what he is saying but how it is being said. When most people hear the words “Fourth of July” they think about fireworks, cookouts, and sparklers. During the 1850’s, the Fourth of July served as a reminder of the many horrors and injustices in the world. On July 4, 1852, Frederick Douglass-- a former American slave, abolitionist leader and adroit speaker-- spoke in Rochester, New York about the affectation of celebrating independence. In his speech, “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery”, he claims celebrating independence is unethical when slavery is widespread. To convince the reader of his claim, he uses rhetorical questions, emotional appeal, and antithesis in hopes of shedding light and sparking action on the wrongful situation.
All great speeches have a purpose, either to rally the population, promote some idea or to encourage others. Winston Churchill’s Speech entitled “Their Finest Hour” has gone down in history as one of the greatest and most powerful speech of the Second World War. It was given in response to the fall of the France in the war, and helped establish the tone for the people of the United Kingdom, that despite the great loss, they still had hope to overcome the enemy forces. Churchill’s speech inspired patriotism, determination and hope. This speech was directed at all the people in the United Kingdom, to unite and to promise a better hope, despite of Hitler’s attempts at world domination and the victory of the Nazis in almost every battle in Europe.

He uses repetition and anadiplosis to repeat his message and drive what he is saying into his spectators/listeners heads, as well as pre-empting, which makes things sound way more serious and crucial and get back at them for what they 've done. There are many great speeches in the world and they all have their different styles that get the crowd to react how they want. There are also a lot of bad orators and speeches but both of these are polemical. They were both great orators that knew how to control the crowd to getting what they wanted but they also had their differences in the use of their rhetorical appeal.they used so many similar rhetorical devices but their motivations and use of repetition was different. Robert F. Kennedy and Antony’s speeches both had very different motivations. In RFk's speech he goes out on the back of a truck and tries to calm down the crowd after just finding out that MLK had been murdered.

Henry also uses repetition, in order to create emphasis. It reinforces the purpose of the speech and the speaker’s main arguments. Here, Henry states, “We must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight!” This exhibits the speaker’s inflammatory language, which calls for action, provokes anger, and triggers strong emotions.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt wrote “The ‘Four Freedom’ Speech” to get his point across that America needs to join World War II, in doing so he used rhetorical devices and appeals. Roosevelt uses logos as a rhetorical appeal by saying “the assailants are still on the march, threatening other nations, great and small. ”(Roosevelt 271) He gives logical reasoning about the threat to other nations. Roosevelt wrote that to let other nations know to be ready for war.
In 1962 President John F. Kennedy held a press conference in which he informed the audience on his stance for the rising steel prices. Kennedy not only wanted to inform the audience, he wanted to get them on his side of the argument. He wanted to show the audience that the rising steel prices were going to have a negative impact on the nation. To do this Kennedy used some of the rhetoric strategies and tools. He used periodic sentences, anaphora, and diction.
